Psychosis or Marketing Tactic? Daisy Daeschler ’21 Published in the International Journal of Social Determinants of Health and Health Services

Daisy Daeschler ’21 has just published her research with Dr. Fugh-Berman on “Parkinson’s Disease Psychosis and the Marketing of Pimavanserin.”

In the study, Daeschler and Fugh-Berman examine trends in perceptions of Parkinson’s Disease Psychosis (PDP) from the 1990s to 2020 through multiple sources, such as MEDLINE search term frequency, neurology textbooks, guidance from professional societies, and sponsored websites. Their analysis suggests that industry-sponsored education contained misleading information on PDP in order to increase the use of the drug pimavanserin, which “is likely to have resulted in many avoidable deaths.”
