Food Swamps: HAPI Students Publish Op-Ed in Washington Post

To this day, only three of the 49 full-service grocery stores in D.C. are located in Wards 7 and 8...Despite rapid economic development in D.C. from 2010 to 2020, Wards 7 and 8 lost four  of their seven full-service grocery stores. In that same period, Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 gained a total of 37 grocery stores .

HAPI students Esther Priscilla Ebuehi, Divya Vemulapalli, and Emel Yavuzel just published their piece on food insecurity and “food swamps,” or areas with an abundance of unhealthy food options compared to full-service grocery stories, in DC Wards 7 and 8. They investigate the failures of tax-incentive programs to resolve food insecurity and urge the city to prioritize constructing full-service grocery stores in these underserved areas.
