When [Peru] released its first dataset in 2015, the numbers painted a grim picture: IPV [intimate partner violence] rates nearly three times the global average and widespread femicide…Although the total percentage of women reporting IPV has since decreased by nearly 20%, this progress is largely confined to urban centers, with IPV and femicide rates stagnating or worsening in many rural areas.
Anya Hirschfeld, MS ’24
Last week, recent HAPI alum Anya Hirschfeld published an article on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in Peru for Think Global Health, an online bulletin initiative from the Council on Foreign Relations. In the article, Anya examines how Peru, whose rates of IPV are currently “twice the global average,” is working to reduce instances of IPV through trainings, increased reporting options, and other interventions. Her research investigates the benefits and limitations of these measures, especially in rural areas of the country. Read the full report in Think Global Health.
Anya is currently an intern for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations. She graduated from the MS-HAPI program in December of 2024.
