Advocacy in Action: PharmedOut Organizes a Letter Challenging “Dangerous Disinformation”

Posted in News  |  Tagged , , ,

A recent STAT news article covers Program Co-Director Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman’s organization, PharmedOut, which has organized a letter signed by multiple experts on women’s health “demanding that the Federation of State Medical Boards removes a new documentary about menopause from its continuing medical education program.”

The film, “The M Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause,” aims to address scientific, medical, and historical cultural perspectives on the phenomenon; however, the letter argues that this documentary contains “non-stop, dangerous disinformation,” chief among them the recommendation that individuals use menopausal hormone therapy for off-label uses that “directly contradict FDA-approved product labeling.”

Dr. Fugh-Berman’s work with PharmedOut, an organization that researches and educates the public on deceptive pharmaceutical marketing tactics, informs the M.S. Health and the Public Interest program’s focus on bringing healthcare education into the real world through advocacy.
