Dangerous Fentanyl “Candy” Off the Market: Program Co-Director Adriane Fugh-Berman Published in The Kansas City Star

Last week, Program Co-Director Adriane Fugh-Berman published an opinion piece with PharmedOut colleague Judy Butler in The Kansas City Star. The piece covers the rise and fall of fentanyl lollipops, lozenges, and mouth sprays, all of which were recently discontinued. The article argues that such products played a large role in fueling the U.S. opioid crisis, as its makers frequently marketed them for unapproved purposes.

Manufacturers’ recent voluntary withdrawal of [immediate release fentanyl products] is good news, but these drugs should never have been approved. Their presence on the market for more than 20 years is a testament to inadequate regulation of drugs. Good riddance to bad medicine.
